And if you need to catch up, check out the previous Nashville recap here. Connie Britton is, indeed, leaving Nashville. And this week’s episode chronicles in heartbreaking detail the tumultuous final hours of Rayna Jaymes’ life. More on that here.)RELATEDConnie Britton Talks . It is also the most heartbreaking. I have watched a lot of screeners during my time at TVLine, but this installment of Nashville was the first one that made me cry at my desk. And I won’t be able to hear “A Life That’s Good” the same way again. Read on for the highlights of the episode. RELATEDNashville Tragedy: The Story Behind That Mother of a Cameo. PHEW! It’s not good: The car crash at the end of the previous episode left her with a crushed pelvis and hip and a broken leg. While Deacon speeds to the hospital, he calls Maddie and tells her to get there ASAP; Gunnar phones Scarlett, who’s still in bed with Damien, and relays the message that Deke needs her to pick up Daphne from choir practice at school. Rayna is looking pretty beat- up (and understandably so) when Deacon arrives; she’s on a lot of morphine, and she needs surgery soon. But she wakes up and gives him a sheepish smile, asking, “Can you believe this?” The officer driving her car is fine, and Ray doesn’t remember much about the accident. But by the time Scarlett, Daphne and Maddie arrive at the hospital, Rayna is making loopy jokes — “What is it with me and car accidents?” — and teasing the doctor who wants to play her music during the operation to choose the playlist carefully, because “there were a couple of clunkers back in the ’9. Maddie, meanwhile, takes a few panicked gulps of air and then runs out to throw up in the ladies’ room. Scarlett follows her and assures the guilty- feeling teen that her mom’s coming to see Clay play didn’t directly lead to the accident. While Rayna’s four- hour surgery is going on, Maddie retreats to Clay’s car — he’s dutifully waiting in the parking lot — and asks him to drive while she cries. RELATEDNashville Mystery: So. And when she wakes up, Rayna tells a relieved Deacon that she really wants a cheeseburger. It’s a lot like the last time she woke up in a hospital bed after a crash, she says, except “What’s different now is that you’re right here next to me. That’s just the sweetest feeling in the whole world.” Then she holds a brief business meeting with Bucky and demands that Deacon get his guitar, because they’ve got some songwriting to do. He gently says no, but she’s insistent that they write a coda to the album, one that makes it clear that their relationship hasn’t all been about pain: “We’ve got to write that beautiful story,” she says, drugged but sincere. RELATEDThe Verdict’s In: Nashville. She and Clay are walking on the bridge where her dad proposed to Rayna. Maddie muses about a day when she and Rayna were walking on the bridge together, and Maddie realized for the first time that her mom was a person outside of being her primary caretaker/punching bag. Clay chimes in that life with his mom was always a “rollercoaster.” (Side note: I realize this is so not the point of this episode, but I’m still not loving Clay. He feels like everything I thought was interesting about guys when I was 1. Maybe that’s the point?)RELATED Nashville Midseason Finale Date Set. JULIETTE ARRIVES . The country divas engage in some gentle ribbing (JULIETTE: I don’t want to talk about me right now. RAYNA: But you’re so much better at it than I am.) before Rayna dreamily notes that her former frenemy has changed. What a gorgeous, intimate scene for the two of them. I wish we’d have had more of these. The next morning, Deacon brings his beloved a smoothie and a cheeseburger, which she downs handily, and everything seems like it’s going to be OK! But Vision. Mom disagrees, saying, “Maybe this song is finished.” Guys, I don’t think she’s talking about music. Reba take the wheel! After Deke comes in and sees Rayna talking to an empty chair like she’s Clint Eastwood at the 2. Republican Convention, he freaks — but Rayna’s doctor says nothing is wrong. So other friends come to visit, like Scarlett who evokes one last burst of feminism in the feisty invalid when Rayna points out that women often find themselves the objects of relationships instead of equal partners in them. Their acapella version of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” is gorgeous. And it also is the soundtrack of the beginning of the end. While Daphne sings her heart out, Deacon notices that Rayna’s not doing OK. Soon, the medical staff is pushing the kids out of the way to get to Rayna, Deke is panicking, monitor alarms are going off and this? This is the exact moment that Michael Ausiello noticed my emotional state and messaged me, “Please don’t try to hug me.”Rayna is immediately wheeled to the Intensive Care Unit. Deacon texts Maddie, who’s stuck in traffic after spending the night at Clay’s, and tells her to get back now. So she gets out of the car and runs toward the hospital. In the ICU, a doctor explains to Deacon that Rayna’s kidneys are shutting down because tissue from her bone marrow leaked into her circulatory system, and all they can do is wait and hope everything straightens itself out. He sneaks into her area when no one’s looking, and Rayna makes him promise he’ll be strong for the girls “if something happens.” He kisses her on the mouth as the nurses rush in to tell him to leave, and that’s when he breaks a little. And when Rayna replies not with “I won’t!” or “It’ll be OK” but “I’m sorry,” that’s when it becomes clear, at least to me: She’s dying. RELATEDCable/Streaming Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s On the Bubble? THE END . Juliette, who earlier in the episode complained that her leg felt like it was “rotting” but who just got good news that she’s fine, makes her way to the ICU with Avery in tow and figures now is as good a time as any to dump her crutches and walk on her own. She kisses a comatose Rayna on her forehead and whispers, “All I ever wanted was for you to be proud of me,” which is sweet and all but which struck me as a very melodramatic moment in an episode that otherwise felt very real. Gunnar, Scarlett and Maddie also show up, and there are a whole lotta tears all around. Later, it’s just Deacon, Maddie and Daphne sitting by Rayna’s bed. When the younger sister says she doesn’t know what to say to her mom, Maddie starts singing, “A Life That’s Good” in a cracked, teary voice. Daphne joins in, harmonizing. Deacon adds his voice on the line, “I don’t need faith.” IT IS GORGEOUS AND EXCRUCIATING AT THE SAME TIME. As they hit the part about “Two arms around me, Heaven to ground me,” Rayna opens her eyes and sees them for the last time. Then she closes her eyes, flatlines and dies. The girls start sobbing, lying on top of their mom, and Deacon can’t do anything but collapse on top of them. The nurses come in to try to resuscitate, but it seems like a formality. The camera closes in on Deacon’s face, gripped in grief, as a tear slips out. And just like that, Rayna’s gone, y’all. Now it’s your turn. Did you ever think Nashville would really kill Rayna? Hit the comments with your thoughts. After learning that the trait of rolling your tongue is genetic, he wants to find others that can do it too in the hopes he can find his birth parents. Jack is worried that they should talk to Randall about it, and that he’ll forever be looking for his biological family to fill a hole in his life. Rebecca is adamant that they’re his family and that they give him everything he wants, she can even roll her tongue like Randall. Yvette comes over to pick up her boys from a play date with Randall and Jack brings up the tongue issues. She brings more news that Randall has been talking about who his father might be, usually it’s describing jobs that he’s seen black men working in like their mailman. Her suggestion is they try to find him some black male role models, and she has an idea of where they can go. Trying out Yvette’s suggestion, Jack takes Randall to sign up for karate. The teacher and the rest of the boys are black. But Jack worries that it’s not enough and wants to try and track down Randall’s family with a private investigator. When Jack asks why Rebecca is so against finding his parents, a flashback reveals that she went to see William recently. She learned that William had been clean for a few years and was working at a music shop. When she brings up Randall wanting to meet his father, William is so excited that it gets her panicked and she leaves. Since their adoption wasn’t exactly typical, Rebecca is worried that William could take Randall away if he knew who he was. They need to be enough for Randall, Rebecca convinces Jack. She also secretly writes William and lets him know her decision. At the karate class initiation, Jack proves that he can carry his son through life by doing push ups while Randall lays on him. He even goes the extra mile and does more than the teacher asks. Then the rest of the fathers do the same. When William and Beth check up on him, Randall is already up to 2. They’re not off the hook either, both kept the secret from him too, but Rebecca is the one he feels the most betrayed by. Kate is shocked to learn about the secret that their mother kept, after all she walked in after Randall’s blow up. Kevin is more worried about Kate’s decision to get surgery because of the risks. Even though Kate says it’s not a big deal, Kevin thinks it may have to do with her breakup. On top of everything else going on, Kevin learned that Rebecca plans to sell their family cabin. To escape all of their worries, the three of them go to the cabin. While Randall wants to clear out all of his stuff, Kate and Kevin want to relive the memories. Always there to fix everyone else’s problems, Kate tries to cheer Randall up and convince him that their family is real even with Rebecca’s lies. She wants to spend the day having fun together and they can’t do that if Randall is angry the whole time. Another barrier in the way is Olivia showing up with the playwright Sloane and Asher. They play board games to pass the time, and Kate is not impressed with Olivia’s attitude. Especially when they learn she brought an ex to the cabin with her, as Asher admits they dated. Even more shocking, they learn that Randall unknowingly ate some mushrooms and is now tripping. The hallucinations he experience has him talking with Jack who can’t believe the secret Rebecca kept. Wanting to protect Kevin, Kate confronts Olivia about the game she’s playing with Kevin. But Olivia turns it back around on Kate and says she’s holding her brother back because she’s jealous of him. Kate stands her ground until Olivia says Kate is worried nothing will change even if she does lose all her weight. When Kate retells what Olivia said to Kevin, he seems to take her side. He’s still worried about the surgery and says Olivia has a point. But Kate thinks that he’s just trying to impress his new theatre friends. Randall continues to have his hallucination and Jack tells him that they gave him everything that they could. But Randall says he couldn’t feel grateful when he was their replacement baby. It was never a choice, Jack says, Randall was his son from the moment he saw him. Still, Randall says it would have made all the difference in the world if he had known earlier that he father wanted him. Wondering what the deal is with Asher and Olivia, Kevin asks Sloane. What he learns is that Sloane actually hates Olivia for making her come. Her rental car was supposed to be used to go visit her newborn niece, but instead Olivia asked her to bring them to the cabin. Since Sloane needs to keep Olivia happy, as one of the stars of the play, she had to say yes. With Kevin seemingly on Olivia’s side, Kate calls Toby. He listens as she describes her awful day but he says that if they’re still broken up then he can’t be that person for her anymore. It just makes Kate feel worse. Meanwhile, Kevin snaps at Olivia and Asher as the cuddle and make fun of home videos of Kate. He unloads a truth bomb on Olivia wondering if she’s incapable of doing anything that isn’t a calculated move. Without responding, Olivia and Asher leave but don’t tell Sloane. Kevin finds Kate moping out in the woods and apologizes for everything that happened today and admits she was right about Olivia. Kate says that Olivia was right about her too, she’s worried about what will happen after the surgery. But she’s more worried about what will happen if she doesn’t do the surgery. On top of it all she’s missing Toby and needs her brothers now more than ever. He tries to convince her to move closer to them, but before she can respond they find their names carved into a tree from their youth. Randall continues his hallucination by yelling at Rebecca as she plays a board game with his younger self. He lets loose all of the hurt but she doesn’t see him. So Jack tells Randall to look at things from another perspective and he see’s how Rebecca tried desperately to keep the kids safe from all the harm outside the world, and it nearly tore her apart. The next morning, Kate catches Kevin in bed with Sloane after hearing a noise outside. It turns out that Randall is fixing up the cabin a bit before they leave and says he’s doing it for their dad. On the way home, they stop by Rebecca’s house and Randall realizes how lonely she must have been keeping the secret to herself. After breaking down crying, Rebecca tries to hug him but Randall isn’t ready for that just yet. The list Randall worked so long on stay with him when he leaves. What did you think of.
